Week 12

This week was a very stressful one in Stainless Inc. We could see the due date approach and had worked hard to manage our time wisely, but despite this, we simply could not get our transport mechanism to work as smoothly as we had hoped initially. Our cart continued to be too unstable. We changed the whole idea of transporting the moai in a box, and instead made a platform on top of the car to tie the moai on in hopes that it would be somewhat more secure. This mechanism appears to work better, but it is extremely difficult to keep the moai still in the initial part of the ramp. Additionally, we came up with the idea of toppling the cart so the moai would fall on the ahu. This is much more realistic than simply using man power to move the moai, and it is much more simple than using a ramp (mainly because of the instability and height of the cart). To topple the cart, we placed a piece of wood towards the end of the terrain and moved the strings of the pulleys in such a way that the cart would slowly fall forward of the ahu. We still need to polish our mechanism, but it appears to work initially. We also placed some string on the ahu to be able to correct the position of the moai in the case of it falling in a different way than it has in all of our previous trials.
